In line with the whole school vision on CfW, the importance of Design Technology in the modern world cannot be overstated. Developments in this area has always been a key driver of change in society, underpinning innovation and impacting on everyone’s lives economically, culturally and environmentally. 


Our vision for Design Technology at Pen Y Dre is to promote interest, learning and creativity through imaginative and enjoyable experiences. We are passionate about Design Technology and its ability to enrich our learners’ mind, instilling a never-ending curiosity about the world. We want to challenge students to recognise problems and ask and explore questions as well as finding practical solutions to everyday problems.

4 Purposes

How pupils will achieve the 4 Purposes in Design Technology

Ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives

Set challenging targets; incentivising learners; provide examples of what learners can achieve - show them what ‘Good/Excellent’ looks like and demo/provide support mechanisms to achieve good quality outcomes

Allow/encourage learners to make mistakes and correct them; and be able to recognise potential issues before they arise - being proactive rather than reactive

Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work

Enterprise - make good quality products good enough to be sold in the real world

Creativity - encourage  autonomy/individuality/designing for others

Link to careers - educate about wide range of related careers

Visits to/from companies to promote DT within their organisations -e.g.  Panasonic

Teaching skills transferable that are relevant to the real world

Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

 

Sustainability - across all focus areas - One of our Big Ideas

Ethics - raise awareness of some manufacturing/popular companies - PLT - poor working conditions, throwaway society - pre-loved - circular economy

Environmental effects of materials/processes etc.

Make more use of locally sourced materials

Find out what is taught in other AoLEs to avoid duplication but also to reinforce same message e.g. microplastics

Healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

 

Healthy - importance of H&S; lifestyle choices e.g. nutrition, environment, mental health - resilience

-          to understand the key messages around sustainability for example, and take that home/share it with others

Encourage learners to make mistakes/learn from them/pre-empt repeats of same mistakes over and over

Mentoring within the classroom - share expertise/learn from each other

Encourage independence/willingness to try

 

Learning within this subject plays a vital role in enabling learners to contribute to a better society by improving the quality of their lives and the lives of others. This will enhance their sense of responsibility, improve their well-being and increase their self-esteem as conscientious citizens of Wales and the world.
