Art is an exciting and relevant subject that gives our learners the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding by experimenting with a range of materials and techniques. Processes include drawing, painting, print-making, working with clay and mixed-media sculpture. Our projects are carried out within both historical and contemporary contexts and seek to discuss the ideas behind the work of relevant artists and movements from ancient times up to the present day.
We are extremely fortunate to have an exceptionally talented ‘Artist – in –Residence’ who regularly works with small groups of learners on relevant and challenging projects linked to the Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculum and on ‘live’ projects such as the exciting collaboration between the Art department and the £8 million regeneration project to turn the old Town Hall in Merthyr Tydfil into an Art Complex called ‘The Red House’.
Learners have also exhibited their excellent paintings, sculptures, sketch books and prints in Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery. The artwork created by our learners was extremely well received and it was a fantastic opportunity for talented, young artists to promote their artwork and see what the public thought of it.
Learners are taught to develop their creativity and ideas and also acquire a critical understanding of local and international artists that can inform and influence their work
