There are two teachers in the Welsh Department. The department provides Welsh Second Language for Key Stage 3 & 4. In Key Stage 3 each pupil receives two lessons of Welsh every week and Welsh is studied through themes such as Food, Sport, Clothes and Fashion, Music and Holidays.

In Key Stage 4 the full Welsh Second Language GCSE Course is available as an option, and those who do not select the full course study the Welsh Second Language GCSE Short Course. The department is going from strength to strength with 100% of full course candidates gaining grades between A* - C last year. We have a very strong relationship with our primary feeder schools.

We go out and deliver lesson at the schools every fortnight. This arrangement has had a noticeable effect on the standards of understanding and attainment in Key Stage 3 and as a result we have started teaching the GCSE syllabus in year 9.

The department arranges the popular school Eisteddfod on St David’s day across Key Stage 3. There are competitions in every subject and recitation, dancing and music competitions on the stage. Also a successful annual Eisteddfod is held for our primary schools in February.

Our boys recitation team for year 7-9 reached the stage at the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Bala in 2014 and we are preparing enthusiastically for the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Caerphilly in 2015. Pupils from year 7&8 enjoy a trip to Llangrannog Activity Centre each June and year 9&10 go to Glan-llyn Activity Centre in North Wales.

The staff from the language initiative office at the Soar Centre in Merthyr Tydfil come in to school to run a fun Welsh Club for pupils in year 7 every Tuesday after school
