Professional Teaching Awards Cymru 2019: Winner
Pen y Dre High School has become the first ever school in Wales to win the Welsh Government's Professional Teaching Awards Cymru for three consecutive years. In 2017 Pen y Dre was awarded the honour for Engaging Parents and the Community. In 2018 the school doubled its success by winning the category of Support Worker of the Year. This honour was awarded to the school's Artist in Residence, Mr Adam Griffiths. Remarkably, the school has now scooped a hat-trick of awards by winning the 2019 Inspirational Use of the Welsh Language.
The winning citation noted : "Pen y Dre High School's Head of Welsh, Mr Mark Morgan, is an exceptional teacher, a great man and described as one in a million. He personifies the highest standards and his leadership has seen a surge in the popularity of Welsh as a subject, and in the examination success of his pupils. He has impacted the school in so many ways and has permanently changed the outlook on Welsh. Mark has been a breath of fresh air to the school and community, encouraging pupils and adults of all abilities to speak Welsh wherever and whenever they can. Pupils idolise Mark, describing him as inspiring and caring. "
