The science faculty at Pen-Y-Dre comprises 8 laboratories and an ICT science suite.  There are 10 science teachers and a laboratory technician.

On entering Pen-Y-Dre, pupils in year seven are placed into sets based on their ability in science.  Pupils are moved up or down sets depending on their level of work.  Pupils follow a general science course in years seven and eight, incorporating special 'Thinking Skills' lessons and cross-curricular ICT.

In year nine pupils at Pen-Y-Dre now start GCSE science.  Entry level is also offered for some learners at key stage four.  The school is pleased to still offer the separate sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) at GCSE.

The science faculty encourages learners to follow post-16 courses in science.  Presently available at Pen-Y-Dre are Advanced Level Physics, Chemistry and Biology.  It is planned to offer applied/vocational science qualifications in the future.
