Keystage 4

The courses within the department aim to develop key skills and enhance young people’s career prospects in the workplace and higher education.  The department also offers a range of extra-curricular activities.

GCSE BUSINESS STUDIES (WJEC)

This course covers all aspects of business and is 75% exam and 25% coursework.  The exam is based on mini case studies and pupils are required to apply their knowledge and understanding.

The coursework requires pupils to produce a business plan for a chosen business.  Pupils gain a variety of skills including, communication, research, number and ICT.

BTEC TRAVEL & TOURISM (EDEXCEL)

This course is about the travel and tourism industry and how it operates.  Topics studied will include customer service, major tourist destinations and how the travel industry markets itself.  Pupils will be involved in active learning and will gain experience of working in the travel industry.

 The course is 100% coursework assessment and evidence of research will be based on a variety of methods.

Keystage 5

‘A’ LEVELS – APPLIED BUSINESS (Equivalent to 1 or 2 ‘A’ levels)

 The aims and objectives of the Applied Business is to know and understand the world of business appropriate to level 3 of the National Qualifications Framework.

 This course is available at 3 levels.  AS level is half an ‘A’ level and consists of 3 units to be completed within one year (one unit will be externally tested).  The single ‘A’ level consists of 6 units to be completed over either one or two years.  The double award consists of 12 units to be completed over two years and is equivalent to two ‘A’ levels.  Approximately 30% of the units are externally tested.  All coursework is based on local industries and businesses.  Evidence will be based on a variety of methods.

Extra-Curricular Activities

TRANSITIONS

Enterprise activities organised and delivered with feeder schools in the summer term.  Part of the overall, school transition project.

ENTERPRISE KS3/4

‘Enterprise in focus’ morning sessions organised for years 7, 9 and 10.  Morning session involving the whole year group and form tutors.  Pupils will gain key skills in Working with Others and Communication.

COMPETITIONS

 The Department also takes part in various competitions such as the Sony Small Business Challenge and the year 10 ‘Britain’s most successful entrepreneur’.
